Why the kitchen ‘triangle rule’ isn’t all that important…

Who invented that anyway?

In my ten + years of designing kitchens, i’ve never coinsciously considered the ‘kitchen triangle rule.’ And the chances are, the sink, fridge and oven, will be in some form of triangle, whether you like it or not. Every space is really different and will have a perfect solution.

A few design principles that I definitely do use are:

  • The distance between the main run and island should be between 950mm and 1350mm, more than this feels too roomy

  • If space allows, I love to increase the depth of the worktops to 700mm, this extra 100mm from the standard, gives a much more usable work surface

  • Ideally the sink is next to the dishwasher, and integrated bins, not only is this practical for plumbing, they all have full height doors, so it looks best visually

  • Drawers are king, I try and include one set of extra wide drawers if possible

  • The oven cannot be physically next to the fridge, there must be a cabinet between them
