What does an interior designer do that an architect doesn’t?
All architects are different, some will be experienced in interiors, and offer a holistic design led service, some will be purely focused on the envelope (i.e. not the specification of your plug sockets) . An architect will generally provide 1:50 scale drawings of your house, plans and external elevations, existing and proposed to submit for planning permisson, they might include basic furniture blocks and a quick kitchen layout. This is a good time to engage an interior designer.
An interior designer will produce 1:20 scale plans, internal elevations, and 3D visuals of the space, considering how every inch of the internal space will be used. Designing kitchens, bathrooms, bespoke joinery, etc. and specifying flooring, radiators, light fixtures, skirtings, wall covering, furniture and more.
Can you design our IKEA kitchen?
Yes I can. I usually recommend Howdens or DIY Kitchens over IKEA, for various reasons, they have many more cabinet sizes which can be critical to the design, and they arrive ridig (pre-assemebled) which saves a lot of time/cost in installation.
How do you charge?
I charge a day rate. Every project is different, therefore I create a bespoke fee proposal, estimating the number of days required, and keep a detailed timesheet throughout.
Some designers take a commission on products but i’ve never worked this way. I pass on all trade discounts, sometimes up to 50%, onto the client.
At what stage of the design process is it best to engage an interior designer?
As early as possible, particularly if you’re using an architect and going through the planning process. Although you may not want to commence concept design until you have secured planning permission, your interior designer may suggest subtle changes to the plan that will improve the interior layout and functionality. Often these changes would still be possible post planning, but occassionaly they won’t, so it is ideal to promote this conversation between architect and interior designer.
